Catching Up New Students

We don't have open entrance classes; however, it takes us two terms to cover a book. Any ideas how to catch up new students with the basics when you are starting in the middle of a book?

My beginning ESL classes have dwindled quite a bit from previous years. In past sessions I would have up to 40 students per class, but this year I've had under 10… Has anyone else experienced this drop off? Any ideas as to why?

I will be teaching Chinese teachers in China this summer. When I did this a couple of years ago, I had a really difficult time getting the students to work in groups. They were all comfortable working by themselves and were very reluctant to speak to each other and "share" work.

What do you recommend for teachers who have a class of 30 adult ESL students, and one of the students is non-literate in their home language? Any techniques or advice on how to help?
