Hello Claudia,
My name is Wong Cook. I will begin a M.ED program in January. I am new to the Las Vegas area and need guidance for maximizing the use of this degree. My undergrad is in Mass Communication with a Public Relations/Advertising track. My wish is to teach subjects related to my undergrad degree at a community college or a high school adult program. As you may know, Mass Communications involve a variety of different subjects ranging from speech to classes in radio or tv. Claudia would you happen to know what schools or colleges I should seek out first as I began my research. Once I complete my masters of education I would like to have an instructors position that I could step right into.

Hi everyone!

Here is the goal setting template that Sheramy is sharing with all of you. Goal Setting

She said that she would like to include conversation activities in the future.

She also explained that she has a great visual depicting goal setting that she uses in class. I'd like to see that—we should get her to share that, too!

Here are some of the documents that I found most useful from the course on Creating Engaging ESOL Activities at www.professionalae.org. I hope you find these useful and enjoyable for both yourselves and your students!

These are links and other resources either used in the course or recommended by other participants of the course. Be sure to look at the last item in the resources document by the course instructor Diana Satin!
CESOL Links
CESOL Resources

This is a 20-page paper which surveys current (2002) and best practice in the integration of technology into ESL instruction for adults. It includes extensive references, computer programs, instructional videos, and Webiography.
Integrating Technology

The following is a 10-page article on integrating technology into adult learning covering both benefits and limitations of four basic approaches: technology as curriculum, as delivery mechanism, as complement to instruction, and instructional tool.
IT Adult Learning

The rest are a template, sample lessons, and a couple of rubrics.
Template for Lesson Plan
Lesson Plan on Commands
Lesson Plan on Present to Past
Lesson Plan on Scrambled Questions
Lesson Plan on Scrambled Sentences
Rubric for Lesson Plan Development
Activity Evaluation Rubric

Class driven use of the Computer.
What technology lends itself to use in working with Adults to improve literacy? For this demonstration I chose to use a Website (http://pre-gedcmc.wetpaint.com/), Twitter and Powerpoint (See: Most common words file below for example of a student driven Powerpoint.)

• You can use Power Point to develop lessons for your student or you can use it to have your student create presentations based on the lessons taught.

• Student and Tutor can work together to create a Power Point or skills can be taught in advance and then a project developed based on the platform you are using. For example a general lesson on how to use basic Powerpoint and then let the student create a powerpoint based on their homework or another assigned project. Early book reports, words with pictures, (for students with Dyslexia)creating visuals for the, and, to

• Here I have created a presentation based on some of the most common words from list 1 in Reading Horizons.

• Then go to Wetpaint to the Pre-GED website and post something about it (create a link)

• From there to Twitter. Under share this email to everyone in the class, twitter, etc.

• Photos- Now and then

• There is no limit and the students themselves will come up with amazing creative ways of using technology.

I've posted some of what I brought back from TESOL in its own forum above.

I attended one presentation regarding responding to student participation in Web 2.0 applications. It was a discussion group, and we were to look at challenges and solutions in assessment and providing feedback to our students when engaged in online collaborative or other digital projects.

We did not accomplish much in our discussion, but it might be useful for our PLC group to consider how to best respond to or assess our own students' participation in these types of learning activities.

The presenters offered several ideas for pairing students for reading comprehension development. (All definitions of the term "critical literacy" are not necessarily equal; I have my own ideas, but here, I've interpreted the presenters' use as "critical reading" or "critical thinking"—please embrace your own interpretation :))

I've posted the Power Point presentation and the pdf handout with some lesson ideas.

Creating Paired Readings that Develop and Enhance Students' Reading Strategies

Lesson Ideas

This is a pdf file of the presenter's Power Point. The presenter focused on using social networking sites as language learning tools.

This could be interesting to apply in the classroom because the sites are free, they can be set up as closed sites, students would learn computer skills, students would practice English communication skills with each other, and students would practice reading on the Web—which is a very different reading comprehension activity when compared to reading standard printed text.

Building Language Learning Communities with Web 2.0 Tools

Angela Andrade told me about the website at http://www.engrade.com. It is a free site where instructors can post grades and students can access them at any time. Some features of the site that instructors may find useful include the ability to:

keep track of students' progress

maintain a running calculation of students' grades based on category percentages the instructor inputs

immediately see average grades for each assignment or assessment, to determine if reteaching is necessary

maintain attendance records

communicate with students via email

maintain a calendar of events, assignments, etc.

keep records for all of your classes in one spot

list the same assignment in more than one class at a time

export all information to Excel

archive completed classes for reference

Advantages for students include the ability to:

keep abreast of their grades

check what assignments they have not turned in, especially if not present in class

be sure that all grades are correctly recorded

find out grades on tests and assignments just as soon as instructor posts them

I have used this site for two semesters now and my students and I both appreciate the features it provides. It is also another tool for those of us who are looking for ways to incorporate technology into our classrooms. I recommend you register and input either a current class you are teaching or make one up just to try it out. If you have any questions, there is a help tab, and you can even contact Engrade directly. I am happy to answer any questions as well, and I would imagine that Angela knows even more about the site and its features than I do. After visiting the site, please post any comments you have to share with us.

Thanks, Lynda

I'm currently taking a class on multiliteracies, and digital or technology literacy is a big part of this. In 1996, The New London Group was formed to create and explore this idea of multiliteracies. They members anticipated dramatic changes in our work lives, civic lives, and personal lives because of changes in our communities' cultural make ups and changes in information technologies, for example.

They suggested that a pedagogy of multiliteracies would be crucial in the future of education because if educators do not help learners achieve literacy in information technologies, for example, we could render them voiceless and, therefore, powerless to navigate that world.

They also suggested that educators should not simply be "technocrats"—they seemed to feel that if we only teach how to use the equipment, we run the risk of producing, "docile, compliant workers" only.

What do you feel is your place as an educator of digital literacy? What do you feel our students need to learn?

Dawnne

This response is a little late in the day, but I enjoyed reading the article. I was especially drawn to the discussion of encouraging the learners to be the digital experts. Available technology evolves rapidly today and will continue to do so, and many of our students are better versed in tech as well as may be better able to teach others. Sometimes a learner can make a concept clearer that the instructor might be able to. I suggest that it's okay to let the learners lead where the learning needs to go sometimes, too.

The discussions of generational personalities were pretty broad. For example, I'm a boomer, but I do not tolerate lecture settings very well. I prefer to study the material on my own and then tease it all apart at my own pace.

Dawnne

What do you recommend for teachers who have a class of 30 adult ESL students, and one of the students is non-literate in their home language? Any techniques or advice on how to help?

Phonics Instruction in ESL Classes

ESL students receive limited phonics instruction. Native speakers in our reading improvement class receive phonics instruction with every class.

In our adult ESL classes, phonics instruction is limited to 'teachable moments' that arise in class during pronunciation exercises that require further explanation through the use of phonics. Personal student goals and program goals of educational level gain, unfortunately, monopolize class time and leave little or no instructional hours for pure phonics instruction. That is not to say that they would not benefit from phonics instruction, but time does not allow it. Many of our ESL students are introduced to an excellent phonics based computer program called, 'Ellis Master Pronunication'. This is one of the best pronunciation programs that I have seen in the area of phonics and pronunciation.

Native English speakers do receive direct phonics instruction in our Reading Improvement Clinic. We currently use the 'READ Test' published by New Readers Press. This one-on-one assessment effectively pinpoints strengths and weaknesses in regards to consonants, vowels, blends, etc. Also, the instructor has been using another informal assessment called 'Words Their Way'. New Readers Press also publishes an excellent phonics system called, 'Focus on Phonics' which is well written and very complete. Our reading instructor also uses the Lindmood/Bell Phonics method in the classroom.
